Places to stay in Tilos
Renting a house or apartment on Tilos is quite easy, whether you want to stay for a few days or a few months. I can often make recommendations, depending on your needs.

Megalo Horio
Megalo Horio has three places to eat and drink, open year-round - the Kafeneion, To Kastro and Kali Kardia - as well as a couple of shops. Beaches within walking distance are Eristos and Ayios Antonis (half an hour), Skafi (45 minutes) and Plaka (easier by scooter).

Milios studioshttp://milios-studios.gr/

There are two artists whose work you can view and buy. Angeliki Stringou is right at the top of the village by the higher of the two churches, and her studio is open from 11am to 7.30pm. - she paints local wildlife and people:

... while Pierre's studio is at the bottom of the village on the way to Eristos.

Eristos
Eristos beach has two tavernas and two kantinas open in the summer only.

Ayios Antonis
This tiny harbour has two tavernas, Elpida and Delfini, open in the summer only, and two places to stay, a house on the waterfront and Antonis Apartments - I'm happy to pass along enquiries for either.

Livadia

Livadia is the port and biggest village, with numerous places to eat and stay.

Marina Beach: family run rooms in quiet part of Livadia Bay with a little quiet beach

Stefanakis Villas: Stelios Stefanakis can also rent you a car or sell you a ferry ticket!

Going via Rhodes/Kos?
Search this blog for things I like in Rhodes. The Old Town has a fantastic Archaeological Museum. If you have time to spare, visit this cafe in a restored traditional house, next to the church of St Fanourios: www.angelacastle.gr
If you're looking for a lovely place to stay in Rhodes, try:
Spirit of the Knights Hotel http://www.rhodesluxuryhotel.com/
For something simpler and easier on the budget, try the Savoy Hotel in Mandraki - the airport bus leaves from just nearby - or Knights of the Old Town.
A lovely, great-value place to stay in Kos is the Kosta Palace on the harbour. There are fish tavernas around the corner, e.g. Sardelles.

  1. I want to move to a Greek island and keep bees and sell the honey. I am near retirement as an Art History teacher in America. Is my idea possible?

    1. Hi Kelly,
It's easy enough to buy or rent a plot of land, and learn about the way the locals do it. Most people here just do it alongside another source of income - but as a hobby that might end up paying for itself, why not? Great way to meet the local community. Good luck with the idea.

  3. It-s real nice reading your blog. We (me, Maria and Erik from Sweden) visited Tilos for the first time in 2003. It was quite magic. We did plan to stay for 5 days, but we actually stayed for 21 days before we went on to Nissyros. We went back the year after to celebrate my 50:th birthday, and we have been to Tilos approx. 7-8 times since then. This year, in May, we are going back to celebrate my 60:th birthday. Can’t wait…

  5. I love your book and blog. My husband and I met 22 years ago in Greece and spent 2 long summers there before starting our family. I have written articles about our subsequent trips to Greece, but my dream is to write about living there. Our collective dream is to buy property in Greece, and to spend time in Kastellorizo, where my husband's family originates, and still has a home. Thank you for your inspiration, and for reminding me of Greece's magic.

I wished you could have put in some pictures of the places you described so I'm hoping by following your blog to see some of these places & people :) I was sad to read about the passing of Vangelis..
Glad to hear you are writing another book, any hints on what it is on?!
Your book was inspiration for me to take care of me.. I too have been in many failed relationships, it's hard on the soul.. At 45 I know my child bearing days are gone but still hold out hope that my "soul" person is out there, as I'm sure yours is too , peace.

  9. Hi. Jennifer. I downloaded your book on Kindle attracted to it by my love of small Greek Islands. I couldn't believe it when I realised it was about Tilos. It is my husbands favourite island and we have been several times but not since 2006. Inspired by your book we are going back on 2nd June for 2 weeks and looking forward to walking and exploring the places we love. We loved the book and it was fascinating to recognise so many of the characters in it. Good luck with the next book!

  10. Hello Jennifer! I will be in Rhodes again next month and would really like to get to Tilos for a day or two this time. Can you advise how the ferries work? I can't make head nor tail of the timetables! Is it possible to come one day and return either αβριο η μεθαβριο? Will you be back there in May?

    1. Hello! Tilos's boat, the Sea Star, is unlikely to be running at that time but there's the Blue Star Diagoras, the big ship, and the faster catamaran Dodekanisos. You can go to Tilos on Monday evening and return Tuesday lunchtime, or go on Tuesday morning and return Thursday lunchtime, or go on Thursday morning and return very early on Friday, or go on Friday evening and return Sunday morning. Maybe best to go and ask one of the travel agents when you arrive in Rhodes. I'll be back in Tilos this afternoon and won't be straying too far :-)

  11. Hi, dear Jennifer :) Last week I came across your book in a bookstore here, in Sofia (Bulgaria). The very first thing I thought was "GREECE! I must have this book!" and I bought it. Today, 6 days later, I've just finished it and... I just wanted to tell you that it is AMAZING! The things you have done, the decisions you have made, the life you have prefered to live.... I am in love with Greece and every time I go there, I do not want to leave it... I hope you are still there! And I can't wait for your next book! Best wishes, M.

  13. Hi Jennifer
We're staying on Halki in a couple of weeks time and will be popping over to Tilos for a few days hoping to look for a long term property rent. We both love the Greek Islands and have decided to finally make the move there hopefully sometime in 2016. After much research, (including reading "honey" over and over) Tilos seems to be the place for us. Are you able to recommend anybody we should speak to whilst we are on Tilos?
Many thanks and we would love to bump into you. Sue & Tony

    1. Hi Sue and Tony,
There are plenty of properties available for long term rental - you'll probably have to speak to a few different people by asking around e.g. in shops and cafes. Depends on what kind of place you're looking for, starting when and for how long... Feel free to contact me when you are here.
      Best, Jen

  14. Kalispera Jennifer, I took your book "Falling into Honey" to Rhodes in August 2015. My word I could not believe how much alike we are so much in common so many similar experiences, I found a friend in reading this book. I was in a café by old Rhodes town where I sat talking to John Manuel we were discussing travels in Greece which I have travelled many times, a country I adore, we then spoke about films and books, I mentioned I was reading a book that I could totally relate to, so I took your book out of my backpack and before I could say anything, John said ah yes I know Jenny....what a small world. I wish you all the best on your next adventure. And yes I give myself gifts one has too!

  15. dear Jennifer - I'm totally gutted. we've just come back from beautiful Tilos (arrived back to dreary UK on 23rd September). your book inspired me to try our Tilos (I didn't know it existed before). I wanted to thank you for bringing Tilos and her beauty into our lives, I don't think our greek holidays will ever be the same again. One evening we were sitting at Kiriakos enjoying our pitta gyros when my eye caught a beautiful Labrador. Then I noticed a demour lady talking greek to a local man. Too scared to come over to say hello I let the moment pass for fear of you not being who I thought you were. but I smiled that night knowing that the lady who was responsible for me looking at the stars and feeling the warm of the Tilos air and making new friends had been sitting less than 10feet away from me. Thank you for "falling in honey" and letting me find Tilos and making memories of my own. Regards Suzanne Stephens @->---

  16. Hello Jennifer, I have just read your lovely book 'Falling in Honey' and was totally entranced by your descriptions of the sights and scents of Tilos. It reminded me of some visits to Cyprus visiting my daughter who lived there - I shall never forget walking her dog every day down to the sea over similar terrain you describe. Magical! I think I read your book at a sitting and now want to go back again! Tilos next time? Many thanks and good luck with the publication of the next instalment.
    Kindest regards, Michael Taylor.

  20. Hey Jennifer,
I just finished reading the Bulgarian version of your book about moving to Tilos. In Bulgaria it's "Honey, sea and Aphroditus". I loved the book. I have been to Greece before but never to Tilos and honestly now I want to visit it. This book inspired me to start my travel blog. It was very interesting for me to live through the whole moving with you. I was literally in Tilos while reading, even if Tilos was in my head and I was sitting on my couch. It was amazing!
