Visiting Tilos

Getting to and from Tilos
Please refer to this ferry schedule, updated whenever the ferries change. At present Tilos does not have its own boat, but the Dodecanese Express and the Diagoras stop off en route between Rhodes and Kos and are very reliable.

Going via Rhodes/Kos?
You can search this blog for posts on Rhodes and Kos for ideas of things to do.
In Rhodes Old Town, the Archaeological Museum is a must. But if you want somewhere unusual to stop off for a drink or something to eat, I'd recommend a visit to 'The Dawn' - a cafe in a beautifully restored traditional house, Angela Castle, next to the church of St Fanourios.

Places to stay in Tilos

Megalo Horio

Megalo Horio has a kafeneion and two good, traditional restaurants, To Kastro and Kali Kardia, as well as a well-stocked shop. Beaches within walking distance are Eristos and Ayios Antonis (half an hour), Skafi (45 minutes) and Plaka (easier by scooter).

Rooms/apartments to rent in Megalo Horio: http://milios-studios.gr/

At Airbnb.com (or contact me directly through here), you can find out how to stay in my house.

Eristos

At lovely Eristos beach there is family-run Eristos Beach Hotel, with one of my favourite restaurants:

Also Nitsa Apartments with its own taverna:

Below Megalo Horio on the road to Eristos is Filoxenia apartments and taverna - only open in the middle of summer: https://www.facebook.com/filoxenia.tilos

Ayios Antonis

This tiny settlement with a small harbour and a beach has two seafront tavernas, Elpida and Delfini. Get there via island bus or rent a car/scooter

Contact me either through here or via Airbnb about Antonis Apartments - the only rooms to rent at Ayios Antonis.

Livadia

Livadia is the port and biggest village, with numerous shops, bars and restaurants. There's also the Tilos Park Information Centre - useful for maps and books.

Michalis Studios, run by my friend Eleftheria, have lovely views.

Tilos Information Office
Open currently 10.30-12.30 Monday to Friday for maps, books etc - between the church and Silversmith in Livadia
Charlie Graham, keeps the office open, also runs Tilos Heritage Tours.

Places to buy - Tilos
Unfortunately the little estate agency run by architect Seva and builder Panayiotis doesn't currently have a website. There are lots of properties for sale on the island but if you're seriously interested in buying, you should get professional advice to find out what's involved.

  1. I have just come back from a holiday in the Canary Islands and took this book as my holiday read. After the hardcore horror books I picked this up on the last day and couldnt' put it down. What a wonderful inspiration to us all, to remember that we have one life and to live it to the full. I love the descriptions of the country and it made me remember Greece some 20 years ago, before tourism hit and the tv series following our teenagers' antics in these now somewhat spoiled places. Now, you have described Tilos as a place that needs to be explored and kept special. I would love to visit. Congratulations on a truly special life and I will continue to read your blog with interest. Thank you so much.

    1. Thank YOU so much, Vicki! Lovely to hear from someone who really got what I wanted to say with this book. I'm fascinated that you ended up reading it after hardcore horror books!! How/where did you find it?

  2. Hi Jen, sorry I should have said, I am a hardened horror fan (I know - you are already thinking nutter!) but am a mum of two and I read an extract of Falling in Honey in a Sunday mag. I thought it looked really interesting (Corfu was my favourite holiday place some 20 years ago - before it became fashionable). Anyway, I ordered your book from Amazon and must say it was the best of the five books I read whilst away. I will be recommending on to family and friends, and I'll put a review on Amazon - you deserve it! Have a good day.

    1. That's brilliant - must have been You mag, I guess. Nice that it caught your attention enough to make it into your summer reading! Thanks so much for offering to put something on Amazon and to recommend it.
Yes, I love Tilos because it's remote enough not to have been spoiled (by the likes of us Brits!). I just hope and pray it doesn't become fashionable...! Though if my book encourages a few more of the right kind of people to come here, that would be good for the island.
Thanks again - for making my day! The Daily Mail are calling later about a story - wish me luck...

  3. No - thank you, it was a pleasure to read and feta went in the shopping today - along with smiley faces and chicken nuggets! Anyway, I hope your talk with the Daily Mail went well. If it's ok, I'll email a copy of my review for Amazon to the Hotmail account - my daughter is getting fed up with me on her profile (I'm not cool enough to be on hers!) - Then you have it just in case you would want to see - I'm sure I wont be the only one to mention it!
    Again, thanks - Vickix

  4. Loved your book. Ordered from the library after reading your article in the Daily Mail.
I couldn't put it down once I started reading, then had to read it again more slowly. Brought back happy memories of the holidays we spent in Cephalonia 15 years or so ago. I now really want to go back to Greece. Jenny Varley North Yorkshire

    1. Yeia sou Sofia!! Thank you so much for your lovely message. The book's not available in Greek (yet?!) but the language of the English edition is quite simple... The English edition's available online at Amazon and Book Depository. Fingers crossed we find a Greek publisher perhaps! Thanks again! x

  7. Hi Jennifer
I am a Greek living in the UK. I just finished reading your book and it reminded me of Greece as I remember it when I was a child. I have never been to Tilos but I can remember this lovely pace of life where there is no rush for anything, people knowing everyone, and just enjoying daily life. Life in the UK is not like that at all. I am lucky that I teach Greek to British people and this keeps me close to the language and everything else about Greece, I share with my students songs, films, recipes, books and anything else I can think of that brings it all to life for them.
    All the best

Thank you so much for this lovely message. I'm glad you found the book and it was able to remind you of things you love about Greece. You must miss so many things - but it must help you to convey passion for your country to your students!
      Warm wishes,
      Jennifer
